| About Ortofon - History Ortofon was founded in 1918 by two Danish engineers, Axel Petersen and Arnold Poulsen. These two pioneers had one very clear objective in mind - to put sound onto film, and with this, they established the Electrical Fonofilms Com-pany A/S, which later on was renamed Ortofon A/S. A few years later, in the Palace Theatre, Copenhagen, they were able to present the first fully-synchronized sound films and in so doing, created a world sensation.
Ortofon was also the first company to produce an outdoor sound film recording. The founders took out several patents and issued licences to film companies the world over for their "System Petersen og Poulsen", which is even to this day the basis for film with optical sound.
Until the second world war, Ortofon's growth was based entirely on the sound film. However, during the war and immediately afterwards, production was re-organized to include record cutting and reproducing equipment. The first Moving Coil cutterhead was produced as early as 1945, and the Moving Coil principle was then further developed to enable production of, first, mono cartridges and, later, also stereo cartridges.
During this busy period of growth, equipment was also being developed for broadcasting networks and recording studios. It was not until later that the Company decided to specialize solely in the development and production of cartridges. Unique experience at both ends of the recording sequence results in unsurpassed performence from every Ortofon cartridge. |
| Ortofon DJ Cartridges and Styli Apart from sounding good, a professional cartridge has to be rugged, and all the Ortofon disco cartridges are very rugged indeed. Several Ortofon technologies make it possible to realize high sound quality and low record wear at the high tracking forces that are necessary in disco environments. The range of disco cartridges from Ortofon covers the needs from the most demanding DJ´s.
DJ's all over the world claim very high demands to their professional equipment, among which the cartridges "plays" their decisive part by realising the scratching, back-cueing, and live artistic performance, as a big part of the show. Reliability and robustness is vital, when the cartridges night after night will have to withstand these demands in environments with extreme soundpressure and vibration.
Scratching and back-cueing impose heavy mechanical stress on the cantilever and its rubber bearing. Therefore, the Ortofon disco cartridges are equipped with cantilevers made from aluminium tube with increased wall thickness. Special attention has also been paid to the attachment of the bearing and the design of the bearing itself. This means that rough treatment will neither damage the cartridge nor degrade its stability.
The OrtofonPro cartridges were the first to combine the unrivalled Ortofon sound quality with the ruggedness that is a must for professional use.
Many years of experience from producing disco cartridges, and a close contact to DJ's, have resulted in several lines suitable for all tonearms and all amplifiers. The Ortofon disco cartridges are available in ½ inch versions for mounting in standard headshells or in the elegant integrated Ortofon Concorde design - for direct mounting in tonearms with standard sockets. For easier cueing, the nose of all the Ortofon disco cartridges has an extra large cut-out which makes the stylus freely visible from above, and further, the tip of the cantilever is fluorescent. |
